The works of
conditioning necessary for the maintenance and improvement of the Church of
Santa Eulalia, propitiated, in the year 1990, the realization of archaeological
excavations of its subsoil. The material remains provided by this intervention
are of great interest and, through them, it has been possible to know the
historical evolution of this space, which is synthesized in four stages: Roman
houses, Christian Necropolis (since the 4th century) in which a Mausoleum in
memory of the martyr, basilica dedicated to Eulalia (V c.) and the current
church (from 1230 to the present).
It is previous
to the visit of the archaeological remains a centre of interpretation on these
remains as well as on the figure of Eulalia, patroness of Mérida.
